Gossip has always existed in human society; it runs in the veins of homosapien blood. The foundation of modern and advanced civilization is dependent on rumors and word of mouth. A world without becomes more harrowing and underdeveloped than the perceived losses of the Library of Alexandria’s burning. Thus, gossiping is essential to the survival of mankind.
Talking about others is a part of the core curriculum, specifically the Associated Union of High School Drama (AUHSD) 5Cs. At Oxford Academy, gossiping allows people to communicate with their peers. Through intense collaboration, critical thinking develops; each person must think back to the recesses of their mind to remember important facts that spice up the gossip session. Engaging in creative conversations allows for anyone to spin a new thread of rumors into the story. The more interesting the story, the more entertaining it is, especially with a few lies sprinkled about.
What’s more reflective of the Oxford curriculum than a storytelling session that carefully analyzes variables, allows for outside input, and has a source to back up each claim? Far exceeding the 5Cs and the Memoir Portfolio, gossiping is the most holistic method to evaluate Oxford students’ capabilities and skills in a real world setting.
Furthermore, the world needs its stories, told through whispers. Someone was born to be the town crier, yelling “here ye, here ye” in the town square. To the uninformed, these conversations might be morally reprehensible, downright unethical, or just wrong. However, to the common elite in society, gossiping is what keeps the past alive. The average American would know nothing about the Revolutionary War if George Washington had said, “maybe I should keep this to myself.”
Gossip also creates friendship bonds that will last for life! Friends (or even complete strangers) that chatter together become lifelong pals with an inseparable bond — it’s scientifically proven. While introductory icebreakers are tedious and stressful, yapping can be cathartic, and even comedic. It is the far superior icebreaker — especially for bonding with Superb Seniors. These friendships are not ill or mean-spirited, but rather born out of joyous memories. Life without gossip is like life without air: It is needed to live.
While these conversations can have a negative rap for spreading rumors, being mean-spirited, or talking bad behind people’s back, people must simply view it in a new light. Conversations have to include a subject. Blabbering drives the right people away, ruining friendships that are toxic and draining. In doing so, it creates a new subject to gossip about. The cycle is repeated, and generates a way to let out one’s feelings. For the right people, some can say it is deserved!
Gossiping is the pillar to modern society as known, and is the only factor keeping civilization from crumbling. Keep the legacy of gossip (and The Damut) alive by spreading a weave of lies today and everyday. Hearsay is simply information-spreading. Embrace flourishing and embellishing the truths — or lies!
