As the school year comes to an end, the Gamut senior staff reminisce about their high school careers while preparing for the next milestones in their lives.
Editor-in-Chief Trisha Phan – Reflecting on your years in Gamut, how much have you changed?
“Going into Gamut I was super shy. Even though it was online, I was still too scared to be myself at first. But, especially last year in Gamut, I was really able to figure out who I was because we became such a close class that I didn’t worry about being self-conscious anymore. I gained more confidence in myself and that really showed in different aspects of my life. Now as Editor in Chief, I’ve definitely learned a lot about public speaking, working with others, and communicating, and I’m a much better leader than when I first started [as EIC] back in August.”
Managing Editor Lavanya Shyamsundar – What will you miss most about Gamut or Oxford?
“I think the Gamut community is just so strong because it really feels like we’re a family. There is so much we can bond over — whether it’s RIF meetings or something [else], it’s something we can talk about, and I’m really going to miss those kinds of conversations. After six years of Oxford, you’re done – in senior year you just want to leave. But, Gamut is one of those things where it’s a bright spot in your day. It’s not just another class, it’s not just another extracurricular that you do for college apps, it’s something that you actually enjoy going to because it’s not just the work we do here that feels impactful, it’s the people that we’re working with that really impacts you.”
Lifestyle Editor Zoharys Jaen – What are your expectations for the future?
“I’m so excited to actually begin a true education somewhere where they value actually going in and understanding the world – college is somewhere where there are other people who are just as passionate as you are about so many different things. College is like my gateway to independence and actually exploring who I am, finding out what I truly love, and how I will be able to change my life and help others later on. Studying abroad, doing internships, making new friendships, going to sports events, just spending time with so many new and different people – I’m so excited, I want graduation to come because I’m ready guys, I’ve been ready.”
College will bring new and exciting adventures for Oxford’s seniors. As they close this chapter of their life and open a new one, the Gamut staff wishes them the best of luck!
