Deepfakes rely on the unauthorized exploitation of hundreds of personal images or videos to effectively produce realistic content, infringing on people’s autonomy over their likeness. This technology was weaponized in the Telegram incident, which disproportionately targeted young women by creating explicit, non-consensual content, leading to emotional and reputational damage. This behavior is repulsive and unacceptable, threatening safety and privacy. While deepfakes can be applied positively, such as bringing historical figures and events to life, balancing technological innovation with moral responsibility is crucial for maintaining the health and safety of modern society and a comfortable online environment. Developers, companies, and lawmakers must collaborate to advance detection technologies and enforce regulations adhering to ethical guidelines. Efforts like California’s recent approval of proposals to regulate the AI industry and fight against harmful deepfakes offer a hopeful path for change that must be expanded upon.
Deepfakes are here and will continue to evolve until reality is indiscernible from AI. Thus, it is vital to address the moral concerns early on to safeguard privacy, autonomy, and the integrity of information before it is too late.
