From enthusiastically leading morning announcements to hosting eagerly anticipated spirit weeks, Oxford’s ASB is a true embodiment of school spirit. Excited to kick off the ’24-’25 school year, spotlighted here are the seniors of ASB’s executive board!
How has ASB influenced your Oxford experience? — Matthew Kim, President
“I was a very shy individual, especially coming back from COVID. With school being online, I didn’t really go out. I was one of those guys that thought I was ‘too cool for school’, and just did everything with my friends. But I think that ASB allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, find new people to communicate with, and helped me realize that school doesn’t revolve around only academics. ASB is genuinely trying to provide a community or a space for you to have fun, as well as prepare you for college.”
What inspired you to take on an executive role? — Cameron Oates, Vice President
“For me, it was a combination of a couple of things. If you don’t know, the vice president runs ASB Senate, which is like a subgroup of ASB. I was in ASB Senate during my freshman and sophomore year, and that’s where my leadership skills started to grow. I learned to really step in and take the initiative to try and improve certain events at school like the Talent Show. I think coming back full circle, with senior year, I want to try to plan these events with my own spin on it, I think that’ll be really fun. Another thing was the executive board last year. Watching the previous Vice President, Louis, run Senate and having Zach as my committee leader. They really inspired me to try and take on a higher leadership role and lead a committee and lead Senate in the best way possible.”
Advice for underclassmen? — Charlena Tran, Treasurer
“You control your mindset and how you think of things. It’s how you perceive the world. If you think that you’re too cool to attend an event, you’re always going to be stuck thinking that you’re too cool and you’re better than everyone else. I say just drop that mindset early on. Think of everyone as your friend, everyone’s here to support one another. Attend the events because ASB works very hard to plan them. And I think just take risks and go for every opportunity that is presented to you.”
From being able to step out of their comfort zone to learning new things from one another, these leaders have truly come far in their ASB journeys and will continue to grow throughout their long-awaited senior year!
