With years of high school experience under their belts, Link Crew leaders bond with underclassmen and welcome them into Oxford’s community with open arms. As for this month’s Senior Features, a few Link Crew members shed light on what it’s like being an influential leader.
Sue Leen Park — What does being a Link Crew leader mean to you?
“In my personal life, I’m an older sibling, but I guess being in Link Crew just made me carry that part of myself over to school too. So, I basically became like the older sibling figure for all the younger kids too. Taking care of them like they were my own younger siblings. Kind of like a familial bond.”
Aarti Chaudhary — How are you connecting with your underclassman group?
“The main thing is giving them advice from someone who’s been through what they’re going through because teachers, they’re good people to talk to, like if you need help at work and all that, but they don’t understand the same experience that you’re going through. So it’s good to have someone who [understands you]. We’re still kids. We still remember everything… We’re a good person for them to go to, to understand any situation they might be going through.”
Haley Park — How has being in Link Crew shaped your Oxford experience?
“Being in Link Crew helped me meet new people and make friends with people I would have otherwise never met and talked to. It helped me become more social and outgoing as a person.”
From providing a healthy middle ground for junior high kids to becoming a better version of themselves, Link Crew leaders are a key element of the Oxford community.
