As the season of witches, ghosts, and trick-or-treating approaches, Oxford students are preparing to celebrate Halloween. From smashing pumpkins to celebrating with birthday cake, learn about how four students treasure this holiday with a variety of spooktacular traditions
Harper Walsh, 11th Grade:
Can you describe the traditions you do for Halloween?
“So the main tradition I have for Halloween is having a party for the annual Anaheim Halloween Parade. A bunch of my friends and family come over to my house to watch the Halloween Parade that goes directly past my house.”
What are some of your favorite memories of Halloween?
“Definitely when it was my younger sister’s first year [seeing the Anaheim Halloween Parade]. She was two months old because she was born in August, so she was really little. She was dressed up as baby Yoda because my dad’s obsessed with Star Wars. It was just very cute to see her being dazed by all the lights.”
Benjamin Nguyen, 7th Grade:
How does Halloween compare to other holidays for you?
“Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because it’s special to me and my family, because it’s my birthday. We have cake, we eat dinner, and we go trick or treating!”
Can you describe what you do each year for Halloween?
“Each year, me and my mom work together to make costumes. And we would compete in the costume contest at my old school. My favorite one I made when my mom was a claw machine. It was pretty cool because we even had a little joystick to pretend and pick up the toys.”
Josiah Flores, 9th Grade:
Can you describe what you do for Halloween?
“Me and my mom, we always, at the end of carving pumpkins, smash the pumpkins for no reason. I’ve been doing this since I was five years old. One day I didn’t want to throw away my pumpkin, and my mom just decided to smash it.”
What are your favorite Halloween costumes?
“Every year, I try to dress up as a different version of Spiderman.”
Sophie Renta, 11th Grade, Senate Treasurer:
Can you describe what the ASB Senate does each year for Halloween?
“Usually we do a costume contest and there’s different categories. [You] go with groups or individuals and compete in your selected category. Usually there’s [categories for] groups, funny, spooky, something along the lines of that.”
What is your favorite part of this upcoming tradition?
“I think it’s going to be especially fun this year because we’re planning on making it a bigger event, not just the costume contest, but also passing out candy, making cookies, kind of a whole little event, so I’m really excited.”
