Open House welcomed students and their families to Oxford on April 23, showcasing students’ progress in their classes throughout the school year. From student presentations to interactive galleries in each classroom, and fundraisers by various organizations, the event connected the Oxford community as it collectively celebrated students’ achievements.
Several classes gave students the opportunity to present their Capstone projects in classroom booths, open for all students and families to visit and participate.
“[Open House] was a really cool experience because we got to present in front of a new crowd of people and not just our classmates, giving us better insight,” said junior Shreya Patel who, with her groupmates, presented her AP Language and Composition Capstone project on the commercialization of art. “I really did enjoy working with [my group] throughout the time we worked on the presentation, so presenting it with them one more time felt really nice too.”
Hundreds of families partook in Open House, given the opportunity to directly observe students’ work and engage with the Oxford community.
“Open House is a special event for me as a parent—it offers a chance to experience what my daughter engages in at school, meet her friends and their families, build connections with her teachers and staff, support the student community through fundraiser purchases, and explore the curriculum taught in her classes,” said Oxford parent Ji Park-Yamachika.
Park-Yamachika described spending time in classrooms and viewing her child and her classmates’ efforts, as well as interacting with her child’s teachers, friends, and their families at Open House as a rewarding experience.
“I could feel the genuine care and support the teachers provide for their students. It was also heartwarming to see my daughter thriving—enjoying time with her friends and peers […] and demonstrating the dedication, commitment, and hard work she pours into ASB.”
Open House not only showcased students’ work to parents, but shared a taste of Oxford with incoming students as well.
“I was in the Paul the Patriot costume, and there was this incoming 7th grader. She was really sweet and really nervous, but she asked me for a tour around the school, so I just showed her around. She was really excited for orchestra and choir, so I showed her the music building!” said ASB senior and Spirit Commissioner Kyle Phan.
Open House served as a full circle moment for Phan, allowing him to reminisce on the beginning of his Oxford journey and use his experiences to serve those about to begin theirs.
“As a 7th grader, I went to the very first Back to School Night and Open House, and I was very nervous and excited to go through the whole school experience. I think this last Open House was kind of a way for me to close it all off; especially helping and working during it.”
