Spring is almost in bloom, and so are the flowers. With spring break just in reach, consider spending some time surrounded by the delightful scents and vibrant colors of California’s blooming flower fields and gardens! Here are a few wondrous flower fields and gardens to explore in California during the month of March!

The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch

5704 Paseo Del Norte, Carlsbad, CA 92008

Persian Buttercups of all colors are spread across 55 acres at the Carlsbad Ranch in Carlsbad, California. With a hillside path to walk along, numerous benches, and picnic tables to use, you won’t have trouble capturing the perfect photo with friends and family. There is also a sweet pea maze, a tractor-wagon ride, and an area where gemstones can be polished. Blueberry picking and fresh-cut Persian buttercups can be purchased as well at the Blueberry stand or the Armstrong Garden Center Gift Shop!

California Botanic Garden

1500 N College Ave, Claremont, CA 91711

Acting as a sanctuary for native Californian plants and animals, the California Botanic Garden is the largest botanic garden in the state with butterflies and birds, creating a mystic atmosphere. There are smaller attractions located in the overall greenery, including a wildflower meadow, sage gallery and garden, various ponds, mountain stream garden, redwood grove, and much more. Taking a leisurely stroll down the many paths available through the native foliage serves as the ideal place to destress and unwind.

Sherman Library and Gardens

2647 East Coast Hwy, Corona Del Mar, CA 92625

The Sherman Library and Garden, as implied by the name, doubles as both a haven for beautiful herbage and a nook for historical books. With several sections and gardens making up Sherman, expect to have a blissful day exploring them: an eye-catching koi fish pond, peaceful tea tables, and charming succulents. On top of individual sections, many lush plants of diverse species crowd around the entrances, exits, and paths along buildings, creating a lovely picturesque environment to venture through!

Fullerton Arboretum

1900 Associated Rd, Fullerton, CA 92831

Located on Cal State Fullerton’s campus, this 26-acre botanical garden hosts many flora and fauna from around the world. Visitors can traverse the Fullerton Arboretum through a network of multiple hiking collections of plants: desert, Mediterranean, woodland, and cultivated. The desert section grows exotic plants while the Mediterranean harbors plants native to California. Ponds with waterfalls occupy the woodland, and the cultivated section is home to a rose garden, a rare fruit grove, and a teaching farm. On their website, fullertonarboretum.org, the arboretum also has a hummingbird hotspot map that you can navigate to catch a glimpse of these little birds in person!

Spring break is at the end of the month, but it is never too early to start looking for fun activities or places to go during the break. These places are perfect for a restful vacation from school, so take time to enjoy the alluring scent of fresh flowers and the magical flutter of butterflies in these gardens and flower fields!

About the Contributors
Miriam Santos
Miriam Santos, Staff Writer

Miriam first joined Gamut to explore journalism and experience the ‘behind-the-scenes’ of newspapers. She loves Mexican cuisine and is a fan of the music artist Slater. Her current go-to read is In the After by Demitria Lunetta; though, her favorite school required-reading was Lord of the Flies. She prefers colder weather over hot weather, preferring the mountains for vacation rather than beaches. Once Christmas comes around, she puts on “Feliz Navidad” to get into the spirits. Her favorite childhood book was the Dork Diaries series, and her favorite mythical animal is a dragon. If Miriam were to describe herself, she would say she is creative because she likes to draw. Miriam also loves taking care of her friends, and a lot of her fellow Gamut staff will agree she is very friendly and caring.

Eva Kim
Eva Kim, Staff Artist
Sophomore Eva Kim is just one of the many fresh faces on the Gamut staff this year, serving as an illustrator. Eva joined the Gamut in hopes of working with passionate, like-minded artists that share her love for drawing on both a recreational and professional level. Dating back to the fourth grade, Eva pinpoints the beginning of her art journey to working with watercolor before eventually branching out to digital art, of which she has amassed a brilliant portfolio. Her greatest inspiration are Instagram artists — explaining her dangerously high screen time on the app — but her muse is the mushroom for its cute, versatile appearance and “it tastes okay, too.” In her free time, Eva enjoys playing with her Jack Russell named Jadoo, named after a Korean children’s cartoon, as well as listening to playlists packed with Lyn Lapid and Dean.
