Few rookie K-pop groups have built momentum as quickly as CORTIS. The group debuted with their first EP Color Outside the Lines–which is also the group’s full namesake– and gained rapid growing success. While other groups lean into traditionally polished concepts, CORTIS is loudly unfiltered and experimental, mixing chaos, color, and confidence in a way that highlights individuality and visual identity. With their new EP, GREENGREEN, released on May 4, CORTIS has an opportunity to continue to build momentum and show off their potential.
What made Color Outside the Lines so memorable was the incorporation of a range of genres. As CORTIS’s debut EP, it not only introduced the group’s sound, but also the message behind their name. Tracks like “What You Want” brought in a retro-inspired sound with newer production, while songs like “GO!” and “FaSHioN” pushed a more chaotic, energetic style. Instead of ‘coloring in one line’, CORTIS showed versatility which made their debut bold and unpredictable, helping them stand out from other rookie groups.
With GREENGREEN, the biggest question is how far will CORTIS push the limits of the sound and identity that initially cemented their influence. They already proved this subversive edge with their pre-released single “REDRED” and track “YOUNGCREATORCREW”. Both are explosive and emit a chaotic energy; rejecting artificiality in favor of authentic individuality. “REDRED” is anchored in piercing high synths and a deep bassline that signal a digital rebellion against societal ‘red flags’. “YOUNGCREATORCREW”, on the other hand, has an intentional unseriousness with unexpected lyrics that feel like the definition of chaos. It feels as if the group is shouting their arrival into the music industry as new creators.
The transition to GREENGREEN signifies that the group is done waiting for permission. If their debut was about introducing their stance on society, this EP is the “green” light they’ve given themselves to act on it. By contrasting the “RED” of fake social behaviors with the “GREEN” of their desired direction, CORTIS is framing their music as a manifesto for the youth. This makes the EP feel less like a collection of songs and more like a cohesive statement on how they intend to navigate the industry confidently and creatively.
CORTIS is not just returning with another album, they’re staging a loud and high energy takeover of their own narrative. By embracing their rather rebellious role in K-pop, they have proven that their self-produced identity is far more than a marketing tag. “GREENGREEN” shows a group that has moved past the need to fit in with rookie expectations where they instead choose to stay true to their own vibrant, messy, and unpredictable image. They prove that sometimes, the most authentic thing you can do is to start shouting for a change.
