With Lee Heeseung’s abrupt departure from South Korean boy band ENHYPEN on March 10, netizens have noticed a concerning pattern involving numerous idol groups under the same company — HYBE Entertainment. In 2026 alone, the company’s involvement in controversial idol exits ranged from a $30 million lawsuit against NewJeans’ member Danielle Marsh to KATSEYE member Manon Bannerman’s “temporary hiatus” on Feb. 20.
HYBE represents a multitude of famed idol groups including Bangtan Boys (BTS), CORTIS, and LE SSERAFIM. The most recent controversial departure from the label centers around the boy band ENHYPEN — the result of a HYBE survival show in 2020, under the subsidiary BELIFT Lab. Known as the exceptional all-rounder idol during the show, Heeseung has always been highly regarded amongst Engenes — the ENHYPEN fandom — and was a fan-favorite throughout his career.
Heeseung held the role of ENHYPEN’s main vocalist and center, recognized for his superiority to other groupmates in terms of vocal technique and range. His expertise can be especially regarded in songs like Fatal Trouble and Moonstruck, which not only feature Heeseung’s high notes, but also his versatile tone and emotional delivery. Without Heeseung’s vocals anchoring the group’s sound during performances, ENHYPEN loses a key component of their production power.
While Heeseung’s departure was sudden, BELIFT Lab announced that it was completely mutual, as Heeseung himself had wanted to pursue a solo career. However, seeing as that other idols within HYBE have undergone successful solo activities while remaining a part of their group, this statement is unconvincing. For instance, Yeonjun from TOMORROW X TOGETHER is an active soloist and group member. All members of BTS have also victoriously pursued solo projects while still being active in the group.
In retaliation, Engenes showcased an unwavering response — over one million signatures on a petition for HYBE to permit Heeseung to remain a part of ENHYPEN during his pursuit of a solo career. The petition calls for ENHYPEN to maintain their brand as a seven-member group, with all members given the freedom to attain their ambitions.
While it is uncertain whether Heeseung truly desired to leave the group, the context of the situation raises intense controversy. With vocal powers such as Manon and Danielle similarly being abruptly removed from their respective groups, Heeseung’s addition prompts questions regarding HYBE Entertainment’s long-term strategy and treatment of its artists.
