On Oct. 10, video game development company DICE Studios released Battlefield 6: a hardcore first-person shooter game that received overwhelming love from fans all over the world. This release comes as a welcome surprise for fans disappointed by Battlefield’s previous releases that failed due to rampant performance issues and bugs, re-establishing DICE as a blockbuster gaming studio.
The chaotic nature and pure fun of this game comes as a surprise as DICE’s last release in 2021, Battlefield 2042, received mixed reviews and many critiques straying too far from the core mechanics of Battlefield. The lack of teamwork oriented, objective based, large-scale combat in the game caused trust in DICE plummeted, with many believing that the Battlefield franchise would never be the same — that is, until Battlefield 6 and its competition with Call of Duty Black Ops 7.
Battlefield and Call of Duty (COD) have been competing against each other ever since their first releases. Luckily for DICE, Activision, the developers for Call of Duty, released Call of Duty Black Ops 6 last year, receiving overwhelming backlash. This year when DICE announced Battlefield 6 and Activision revealed their plans for COD 7, fans on both sides debated on which game would be better. Both game studios capitalized on the rivalry in their marketing campaigns. DICE even took a jab at Activision, mocking their reliance on celebrity cameos in recent Call of Duty titles.
By the time both betas were released, it was clear who was in the lead. Black Ops 7 underperformed, with fans labeling it another cash grab from Activision that was basically the same game as Black Ops 6. On the other hand, Battlefield 6 exceeded expectations, hitting a peak player count of 521,079 on Steam alone. Now, with the full release, fans could see just how much DICE focused on capturing the old feeling of Battlefield that fans initially fell in love with and missed with improvements. Especially with their extensions of aspects like “Levolution”— a player triggered environmental damage system — which allows players to collapse a building by shooting a rocket, is meaningful to players because it’s what made previous games work.
The game’s success also derives itself from endless cinematic moments. Whether it be a helicopter crashing in the middle of the warzone or two jets colliding mid-air, Battlefield always finds a way to immerse players in a realistic portrayal of large-scale combat. DICE beautifully balances the game: No weapon, role, or vehicle feels too powerful, allowing diverse play styles without sacrificing enjoyment for the sake of winning. This refocus on what made Battlefield great in the first place has re-established the franchise as one of the top contenders amongst first-person shooters.
For too long, fans of Battlefield have been waiting for a game like this: a blend of simple, chaotic, and fun. Instead of the run-of-the-mill futuristic shooter game, Battlefield 6 returns players to the modern-day warfare genre, bringing respect back to the Battlefield name.
