Months of strategy, practice, and thrilling gameplay will come to a head when the National Football League (NFL) playoffs begin on Jan. 10. Fans and teams alike eagerly await the twists that the final countdown demands.
The NFL is split into the American and National Football Conferences (AFC and NFC) due to a 1970 merger between the original National and American Football Leagues. The AFC’s top ranked teams are the New England Patriots in the East, Baltimore Ravens in the North, Jacksonville Jaguars in the South, and Denver Broncos in the West. The 10-2 Broncos and 11-2 Patriots lead the AFC. This lead contrasts both teams’ poor performances in previous seasons compared to longstanding powerhouses like the Buffalo Bills or Ravens.
“The Patriots and Drake Maye [are] so surprising,” junior Hy Tran said. “Even [with] the Broncos and the [Green Bay] Packers, you’ll be seeing them in the playoffs past the first round.”
Meanwhile, the Eagles lead the NFC East, Chicago Bears the North, Buccaneers the South, and Los Angeles Rams the West. The Rams, absent from the Super Bowl since their 2022 win, lead the NFC at 9-3, despite a loss against the 7-6 Carolina Panthers. The defending champion Eagles follow the Rams at 8-4.
“Historically, [the Panthers] haven’t been good, but [they had] a huge upset against the Rams here, [who are] expected to win the Super Bowl…[and] have one of the best records in the NFL,” Tran said.
On the other hand, the Kansas City Chiefs, 2024 Super Bowl champions, have fallen flat this season, being third in the AFC West division with a record of 6-6.
“It’s been interesting to watch the…Chiefs not doing as well as people would’ve expected,” CCR and AP Spanish teacher Mrs. Stephan said.
Furthermore, this season’s MVP title is still up for grabs. Frontrunners include Patriots QB Drake Maye, averaging 9.0 yards per attempt; running back Jonathan Taylor, who’s accumulated 895 rushing yards on the Colts; and Matthew Stafford, the Rams QB on top of the league with 32 touchdowns.
“My pick has to be Drake Maye. [The Patriots] have the best record in the league and have surprised pretty much everybody, all while being led by a young quarterback with great stats and leadership,” junior Jonah Kim said
Moving into the playoffs, each team has their weaknesses to overcome. Despite the #1 seed Chicago Bears’ strong offense, led by coach Ben Johnson and QB Caleb Williams, their lacking defense may fail the team in a shootout. Additionally, the Bills need to rally against the Chiefs, who eliminated them in the semifinals in four of the last five years. Even so, the AFC’s Patriots and Broncos and the NFC’s Rams and Eagles remain the top favored Super Bowl contenders.
“The Rams offense has looked insane, so I’ll go with them [for the Super Bowl]. For the AFC, I like how the Patriots are looking, but Denver’s defense is so strong, I feel like I have to go with them,” Kim said.
Players and coaches across the NFL are ready to go all in this January, and whoever comes out on top, it’s bound to be an exciting watch.
