Whether you’re spending Valentine’s Day by yourself, with a special someone, or with friends, here are some of the best TV episodes to stream to achieve maximum holiday spirit!
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: “The Bet” (Season 1 Episode 14)
While Brooklyn Nine-Nine is generally suitable for any mood, The Gamut recommends that readers specifically tune into “The Bet” on Valentine’s Day for some hilariously sweet scenes. Wondering what background knowledge you need before jumping in? Detective Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago have a year-long bet to see who can make the most felony arrests and this episode documents the bet’s results. Although it’s incredibly obvious that the two have feelings for each other, take this Valentine’s Day to bask in the oblivious puppy love of Jake taking Amy out for the “worst date ever.”
The O.C.: “The Heartbreak” (Season 1 Episode 19)
For fans of a good sitcom episode where everything goes wrong, “The Heartbreak” is your perfect Valentine’s Day watch. As the episode follows main characters Ryan and Seth, and even their father Sandy, their misfortunes with love remind you of just how chaotic Valentine’s Day can be. Whether it’s Sandy’s drama with Kirsten, whose adoration for the holiday clashes with Sandy’s indifference, or Ryan and Seth’s tumultuous teenage relationships, take a hint from these characters and do not follow their example when it comes to romance.
Gilmore Girls: A-Tisket, A-Tasket (Season 2, Episode 13)
Do you have a crush on someone who’s currently in a relationship? Typically The Gamut would not recommend you going after them, but we do make exceptions in certain situations. Take Jess and Rory for example: this episode is arguably the pinnacle of romance. Watch carefully and you might be able to pick up some suave moves from Jess, who manages to steal a date with main character Rory Gilmore by out-bidding her boyfriend Dean. Or, sigh as Luke and Lorelai have yet another endearingly oblivious moment still seasons before they finally get together.
How I Met Your Mother: “Desperation Day” (Season 6, Episode 16)
If you haven’t gotten a date yet, you might want to try out Barney’s phenomenon of “Desperation Day.” In How I Met Your Mother, Desperation Day is February 13th, the day where every single girl is supposedly in a hasty rush to secure a date. In other words, shoot your shot! Don’t follow Barney to the T though, take a more respectful route. Give that person your number, tell your friend how you really feel, and take a leap of faith. If you’re content being single, watching Marshall revert to being a man-child as he neglects personal hygiene in favor of video-games will definitely reaffirm your choices.
The Gamut believes that these selections are best viewed with some light refreshments and friends who won’t judge you for your indulgence of such sappy episodes. Happy Valentine’s Patriots!
