Oxford’s ASB leaders are always putting in the hard work; whether it’s early morning setup for rallies, planning our school dances and events to boost morale, and keeping the Oxford spirit high at sports game, their work never goes unnoticed. This month, read about four ASB seniors journeys planning events for the student body and supporting our community.
Elie Nguyen, President — Was there a big difference between Junior High (JH) and High School (HS) ASB?

“Between JH ASB and HS ASB there was a huge jump. I went from brainstorming ideas on a lined piece of notebook paper for monthly events to having to plan 3 months in advance down to the smallest detail of every single minute of an event. In HS ASB we act more like a cohesive team and even family; everything is constructed around how our commissioners and officers can support each other. Even though we look super strict and formal in other people’s eyes, we’re still having a ton of fun carrying bigger responsibilities to make our students happy to the best of our abilities, growing from experiences.”
Amelyn Urban, Activities Commissioner — Why did you decide to join ASB and why did you continue?

“I chose to join ASB way back in seventh grade because I feel like I never came out of my bubble before that; I always stayed where I was comfortable and knew I would be okay. At a new school, I really wanted to branch out and not allow myself to not at least try something that I’d felt interested in for a while. I chose to continue because I found such an amazing sense of community in all my fellow leaders and looked up to upperclassmen so much, that I wanted to be able to provide that kind of mentorship one day and give spaces throughout our campus that every student can feel included in.”
Nicole Lee, Inter-Club Council (ICC) Commissioner — How has ASB impacted your high school experience?

“ASB has basically been my second family throughout high school. Every year, I got to partake in such a tight knit group where I learned how to put myself out there and represent the body. I think ASB has truly helped me to grow into who I am today, and the experiences I had, whether it was being part of the behind the scenes of events or actively in the event, are truly unforgettable.”
Timothy He, Fundraising Commissioner — What is your favorite ASB memory and favorite part of being in it?

“I think the first moment that wowed me was the first First Ball I had in 10th grade because [it was] the first major dance I saw [and worked.] Fall Ball really wowed me just being able to [see people enjoy the events] and then I thinkwhat makes ASB so fun for me is [the] outgoing people. It’s easier to like connect and just have fun with them. They’re always pretty positive and like full of energy and you know just they’re always able to like push them out like keep you laughing or like if you have a test that’s not going well they’ll be like ‘oh it’s okay’ whether it’s the older ones or younger ones and you know it really like helps you realize like there’s more than just like schoolwork and like good grades and keeping those.”
The next time you see an ASB member on campus, don’t forget to thank them for their hard work! See you next month, Patriots.
