Dr. Jose Paolo Magcalas was sworn in as a Trustee for the Anaheim Union High School District at a Dec. 11 school board meeting. The California State University Los Angeles professor was appointed to fill the seat of former Area 3 trustee Katherine H. Smith, who served as a trustee of the district for nearly 30 years. Hoping to bring a fresh perspective to the Board, Dr. Magcalas shared his vision with the Board and audience in a speech that addressed the broader AUHSD community.
“We can build schools where every student is seen, supported, and inspired not just to survive, but to thrive,” he said.
Dr. Magcalas delved into his priorities for AUHSD’s budget decisions, promising that every dollar be allocated to student success. He also pledged to create campuses that are “modern, welcoming, and supported by comprehensive safety plans.”
Responding to the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, Dr. Magcalas suggested that the technology be used to uplift the classroom.
“Our task is to integrate tools that truly enhance learning responsibly, ethically, and transparently,” Dr. Magcalas said. “We are not here to chase trends. We are here to empower teachers with the right resources, protect student data, and give young people the digital confidence and skills they need to lead in future.”
While the speech primarily touched on his goals, Dr. Magcalas also shared his Filipina mother’s immigration story, thanking her for “opening doors that once felt impossible” for him.
“Our family’s story exists because she chose hope over fear and possibility over doubt,” he said. “That same spirit guides me in the work that I will champion for our students and families.”
Raised in Anaheim, Dr. Magcalas attended Clara Barton Elementary, Ball Junior High School, and Loara High School. Having begun his career as a social studies teacher at Loara High School in 2005, he was part of the first Leadership for AUHSD cohort and developed the first Ethnic Studies course for the district.
As a board member, Dr. Magcalas hopes to further emphasize inclusivity and cultural celebration within the district.
“In a district as beautifully diverse as ours, we must continue to build spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered,” he said. “That means culturally responsive teaching, equitable access to programs and policies that honor the many communities that make our schools vibrant and alive.”
Dr. Magcalas will serve the remainder of Smith’s term through the November 2026 general election, when the Area 3 Representative seat will appear on the ballot.
